Absurd spin on old laws makes journalism a crime

ABC Alumni has made a late submission to the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security inquiry into the impact of the exercise of law enforcement and intelligence powers on the freedom of the press

We acknowledge concerns in the media industry about new laws affecting media freedoms, but also raise concerns about new interpretations of older laws being used to to secure search warrants against media outlets or practitioners.

While these statutory interpretations have not been tested in courts, we are deeply concerned the ordinary practice of journalism in this country will have been effectively criminalised. Read our submission
