Calls to boost ABC funds in region
Complex geopolitical times require increased funding for ABC presence in the Indo-Pacific
The ABC international division is both the “voice” of Australia and a major provider of co-operative aid for local broadcasters in the Indo-Pacific region. It has long provided a powerful “soft power” diplomatic tool for Australia.
But despite the current complex geopolitical environment – and with China notably and dramatically extending its media reach in the region – funding for the ABC service has been slashed over the past decade.
ABC Alumni is campaigning together with the expert Australia Asia Pacific Media Initiative (AAPMI – formerly Supporters of Australian Broadcasting in Asia and the Pacific, or SABAP), for a revival and renewal of ABC International.
Jemima Garrett for AAPMI and Helen Grasswill for the Alumni have written strong submissions to the latest DFAT Expert Panel looking into a new international development policy for Australia. Read the Alumni submission and the AAPMI submission
